Route 7 To Be Restricted Next Week For Filming Of 'Unstoppable'

Posted: 4:47 pm EST November 5, 2009Updated: 3:44 pm EST November 6, 2009

State Route 7 will be restricted during daylight hours starting Monday between 26th and 48th streets in Bellaire for filming of the motion picture "Unstoppable."

Traffic will be stopped in 15-minute increments to allow for filming. Police officers will assist with traffic control.

Ohio Department of Transportation officials said Route 7 is likely to experience continuous traffic disruptions throughout the daytime hours. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes to avoid delays during these times.

According to James Mahathey, the movie's location manager for 20th Century Fox, filming in the Bellaire area should be completed by Nov. 13.

"Unstoppable" stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, whose characters are trying to stop a runaway train filled with toxic chemicals that is on a collision course with a town.

Scenes filmed in Bellaire will include the Stone Bridge and railroad tracks. The train will come from West Virginia, across the Ohio River, into Bellaire and proceed north. Three helicopters will also be used during the filming in Bellaire.

Scenes will also be filmed from Route 7 in Martins Ferry the week of Nov. 16.

Some people said the traffic is going to cause drivers grief.

"A lot of people are going to get mad -- a lot of road rage," said Patrick Gill, of Wellsville.

Others said the inconvenience will be worth it in the long run.

"If it's going to help the economy, maybe get some more people to come around to see the sites that are going to to be in the movie. I think it's a great inspiration," said Boyd Carpino, of Bridgeport.

And even with the detour, drivers like Paul Collins of Bridgeport said people can still get to where they need to go.

"(There's) the interstate and I think there's a few ways around that you could get by," Collins said.
