Wounded Soldier Recounts Fort Hood Shooting

Lafayette Man Shot In Hip, Calf

An Indiana soldier was among 31 people wounded when an Army officer opened fire at the Fort Hood military post in Texas Thursday, Indianapolis station WRTV reported.

From his hospital bed, Cpl. Nathan A. Hewitt, 27, of Lafayette, said he can't remember much about what led up to the shooting.

He said he was at the base medical center when a door swung open and people began yelling.

"I heard somebody shooting and I got down, and then I tried to get people out with me as I found a way to get out," Hewitt said.

One bullet grazed his hip, and another hit him in the calf. Still, Hewitt said he was worried about the other soldiers around him.

"There was people hurt worse than I was so I was trying to help them out before I helped myself," he said.

Hewitt is stationed at Fort Hood awaiting deployment to Afghanistan. He has also served a tour of duty in Iraq.

The Indiana National Guard said Thursday it was not aware of any Indiana National Guard soldiers or airmen currently stationed or on duty at Fort Hood, Texas.

Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. The military post, located halfway between Austin and Waco, was home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year.
