Posted: 5:45 pm EST November 8, 2009Updated: 7:10 pm EST November 8, 2009

An expansion at the Tony Teramana Cancer Center at Trinity Health System has nearly doubled the numbr of patients the facility can help.

Center officials invited the public to an open house this afternoon. In the past, the facility could care for roughly twelve patients at the a time in the chemotherapy department. Now they'll be able to bring in 20 patients at a time.

The $8.8 million expansion project took roughly a year to complete and is greatly needed if you talk to staff members.

Keith Murdock, a representative with the Cancer Center, said, "Jefferson County leads the state of Ohio in cancer incidents and it's very unfortunate. I think it's because of that we've contributed more resources to fighting cancer and eventually finding a cure for cancer."

When asked specifically about West Virginia, Murdock says Hancock and Brooke Counties lead the Mountain State in cancer incidents as well.
