Local Police Chief Prepares For Surrogate Scandal Trial

While the tabloids normally focus in Hollywood, the Ohio Valley became a paparazzi hot spot back in the summer.

That's when it was discovered that the surrogate mother for actress Sarah Jessica Parker had a home in Martins Ferry. Then in June, the story took another twist.

Martins Ferry police chief Barry Carpenter, Bridgeport police chief Chad Dojack and local businessman Bruce Callarik were all charged in connection with a theft at that home. That's when the Bureau of Criminal Investigations moved in.

Formal charges were filed against the trio in late July. Police said the men conspired to sell items to a tabloid photographer from the surrogate's Martins Ferry home.

Throughout the investigation, Carpenter continued to claim his innocence.

While Carpenter was suspended, it was back in August that police chief Chad Dojack was put on paid administrative leave.

Charges against Callarik have since been dropped, but that's no indication of how Carpenter's case could play out.

NEWS9's Allison Latos will be in the courthouse first thing Monday morning, when jury selection is scheduled to begin. She'll bring you every development in the case as the trial moves forward.
