Fatal Wetzel County House Fire Under Investigation

Neighbor Tried To Rescue Resident, Couldn't Find Him

Officials were investigating Wednesday after a Wetzel County man died in a house fire Tuesday.

An investigator from the West Virginia fire marshal's office was at the scene, but local fire fighters told NEWS9 they believe it was an accidental fire,

The fire was first reported at 4:15 p.m. in Mobley, W.Va., about 20 miles south of New Martinsville.

The victim was identified and his family had been notified, but investigators declined to release his name.

When fire fighters arrived at the house, they said, half of it had already been consumed by flames.

Crews said a neighbor kicked in the front door and attempted to locate the resident, but could not find him.

Several volunteer fire departments helped get the fire under control. Once it was out, fire fighters found the victim in a rear bedroom.

Investigators believe the fire started in a nearby closet.

A medical examiner on the scene told NEWS9 that the man apparently died from smoke inhalation, but a full autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.
