Surrogate Blogs About Police Chief's Trial, Celebrity Scandal

Posted: 3:43 pm EST November 18, 2009Updated: 5:31 pm EST November 18, 2009

The woman at the center of a celebrity surrogate case is expected to testify in court Thursday. But in the meantime, she's been posting some of her thoughts online.

Michelle Ross served as the surrogate mother for the twins of actress Sarah Jessica Parker and actor Matthew Broderick. Two local police chiefs are charged with a conspiracy to break into Ross' home and sell items related to the surrogacy.

According to court documents, Ross lived on Colerain Pike in Martins Ferry. Though she has not publicly addressed the case, or the current trial of Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter, Ross has written about some of her perspectives on the case.

Through blogs, she writes about being a mother, working as a surrogate and being in the middle of the scandal that resulted in charges against Carpenter and Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack.

She writes in one blog, "Next week is the big week...those of you who know me know what I am talking about."

Ross goes on to talk about Carpenter's trial, asking for it to come to a quick and final end.

Beyond the trial, much of her online posts talk about being a surrogate. As her occupation, she lists "babies."

"Surrogacy is a calling...it is something a woman knows she is meant to do the minute she first hears about it...it is a tug at her heart that never stops, " Ross writes.

In opening arguments Monday for Carpenter's trial, Prosecutor Emily Laube described how Ross made a personal decision to be a surrogate without knowing whom she would be carrying for, nevertheless knowing it was a celebrity couple.

Laube said Ross made a selfless decision that has landed her smack dab in the middle of a national scandal.

On her MySpace page, shortly after the two chiefs were arrested, Ross wrote, "Wonder how those police chiefs and the mayor's son liked their metal bracelets? Can't wait 'til they get their new orange pajamas!"

Ross is expected to take the stand Thursday as a witness for the prosecution as Carpenter's trial continues.

Carpenter was suspended from his position as police chief in August and faces six felony charges. He faces 21 1/2 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

Bridgeport Police Chief Dojack was also charged in connection with the alleged theft and will be tried separately on Jan. 12. Dojack stepped aside as Bridgeport chief while he deals with the charges. He is accused of conspiring to break into the home in order to take items that could be sold to the tabloid publications.

Charges were previously dismissed against Bruce Callarik, who owns the motel where the celebrity photographers were reportedly staying. Callarik is the son of the Bridgeport mayor and also Dojack's father-in-law. He faced the least severe charge: one count of receiving stolen property. The prosecutor said it would be better to use Callarik as a witness so he can cooperate fully and openly with the ongoing investigation.
