Local Bishop Lobbies For Abortion Restrictions In Washington

A local Catholic bishop is flexing his political muscle in Washington, D.C., Friday over the health care overhaul.

Bishops from across the country are coming together insisting on tighter restrictions on abortions.

A key procedural vote for the Senate's new health care bill is expected this weekend, which is what moved Diocese of Steubenville Bishop Daniel Conlon to go to Washington to make a last-minute push to change the plan.

Conlon said he wants Congress to prohibit any federal money from paying for abortions.

"You don't want to be paying for abortions. That's not health care. That's destroying human life," Conlon said.

The House's version of the health care bill doesn't include abortion coverage in the public option plan, but the Senate bill does. The Senate's bill would allow abortion coverage in the public option only if the patient's premiums paid for the procedure.
