W.Va. Gun Season For Deer Begins

Posted: 11:49 am EST November 23, 2009Updated: 6:39 pm EST November 23, 2009

Hunters in West Virginia are setting their sights on deer Monday.

The state's buck gun season opened in all counties except Logan, Mingo, McDowell and Wyoming.

Officials with the state's Division of Natural Resources said they expect 280,000 licensed hunters will hit the woods this season, helping to fuel an annual economic boost of about $233 million.

Each hunter can bag two bucks over the next two weeks. At Cabela's in Ohio County, some hunters were already having their deer tagged before noon Monday.

Some people said the state's early start to the season attracts hunters from across the borders.

Chris Burt, of Washington, Pa., said, "I love hunting. (West Virginia) is close to my home state, so I come down here (and) hunt here. I hunt Ohio as well."

Cabela's workers said it's also a boost for business.

"Store location plays a big role. We see a lot of people from all three states coming in to help in that regard. And being able to sell deer tags and licenses has helped the store," said Joe McGurn, of Cabela's.

The season ends Dec. 5 in West Virginia. Deer gun season in Pennsylvania and Ohio starts Nov. 30.
