6 School Buses Taken Out Of Service After Failing Inspection

What started as a routine inspection ended with six local school buses off the road.

Officials said six Wetzel County school buses violated mechanical standards.

"They weren't totally unsafe, but we had an oil leak or an antifreeze leak or some sort of leak," Superintendent Bill Jones said. "We had an air chamber that was malfunctioned on one."

Jones said the county has 29 buses and six spares, so luckily there was enough to get students around for the day.

As for why the violations weren't caught before the inspector arrived, Jones said he will talk with the transportation director about making some changes. He said each bus in the county currently undergoes routine preventative maintenance.

"We look under the hood, look at fluids, check the brakes and look at the tires," he said.

For now, he said his priority is getting each student on and off the bus safely.

"The fact that we've got all the buses out of service does not bother me at all, considering the fact that if we do have major safety concerns, we're going to catch that before we have an accident," Jones said.

Jones said the district plans to have two of its mechanics in over the Thanksgiving holiday to make the repairs and hopes to have the buses back in service by Monday. The state inspector will return that day to finish checking the fleet.
