Norovirus Outbreak Over At Wheeling Nursing Home

Officials said The Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling is back to normal after an outbreak of norovirus.

Wheeling-Ohio County Health Director Howard Gamble said the virus broke out on Jan. 15, sickening about 60 of the 190 people who live there.

Norovirus is found in feces or vomit and is usually spread by not washing hands.

"It happens. It's nothing uncommon. It's a very common virus. It goes through nursing facilities, day cares. The best way to prevent (the virus) is wash your hands and housekeeping disinfecting," Gamble said.

He said officials contained the virus by sectioning off the facility, limiting visitors and transferring patients.

No new cases had been reported as of Thursday.
