Hidden Water Leak Found In Scio

Crews in Scio are working on a broken water pipe along College Street, that left residents and businesses without water since Friday.

Scio Mayor Bob Hendricks said, "With the cold weather and the rain, mother nature played a dirty trick on us. It was obvious we had an underground leak someplace that was draining into a stream or a culvert because there were no visible signs."

Officials believe a storm sewer drain moved during the recent freezing and thawing and settled against a water line. Under that kind of pressure, the line buckled, leaving the Scio residents and business owners with a big problem.

Hendricks said, "A lot of the businesses had to close and in these economic times that's a hardship. A lot of people in the colder weather have to leave the water trickle to keep from freezing. Now, their lines have now frozen."

With the main leak fixed, crews can turn their attention to other smaller weather-related leaks along College Street.

Scio will be under a mandatory 72-hour boil water advisory and conservation order. Officials want to make sure the water is safe to drink and all tanks are refilled before they lift those orders.
