Flood Concerns Keep Growing

The sun is out, the snow is melting and many people already have a case of spring fever. However, as temperatures keep climbing, flood concerns keep growing."The Steubenville area and along the Ohio River, that is going to melt out in the next day or two,” National Weather Service Hydrologist Bill Drzal said. “But it’s going to take a lot longer for that snow that’s three, four, five feet deep up in the mountains.”Drzal said the rain would initially get absorbed by the snow pack but that they are trying to gauge how much snow will melt and make its way down the Ohio River. He also said that the amount of snow on the ground this time of year is unusual."We actually have more snow on the ground at this time,” Drzal said. “It is March and the sun is higher, so that’s not a good thing." Drzal said that 1-2 inches of rainfall is possible Thursday through Friday, and the rain combined with the melting snow could result in the Cheat and Youghiogheny rivers rising and eventually flood the Ohio River. "This is the laurel down into West Virginia - and the cheat river flows through this area and this is totally uncontrolled," Drzal said. "There is no flood control reservoir so that’s always one of our big concerns." "The storm is at the end of the week, then we have to take the time for the water to get down to the Steubenville area,” Drzal said, “so we are looking well into the weekend before we have a possible river event."
