During a special meeting this afternoon, Weirton Council is scheduled to vote on a proposed sewer rate increase.City officials said if the proposed increase is passed, customers would see a $2.70 increase in their flat monthly bill.According to city officials, this proposed sewer rate increase comes on the heels of learning raw, untreated sewage is dumping into the Ohio River. Authorities said the sewage flowing into the river is coming from nearly one thousand city buildings in Weirton.Officials said an equipment problem is to blame for the sewage leaking into the river. While Weirton Council votes on the sewage rate increase today, the rate increase still has to pass two readings, which includes a public hearing, before the tax rate increase can take effect.
