MARTINS FERRY, Ohio -- It was standing room only at Martins Ferry's city council meeting Tuesday night.

Residents and community leaders called for Mayor Phil Wallace to resign after he admitted to making a racial slur while he was secretly taped in a private meeting.

"I think the people of Martins Ferry are united on this, both black and white unanimously. The mayor needs to resign, " said local NAACP President Royal Mayo.

Mayo also said if Wallace won't resign, they are prepared to recall the election that put Wallace in office.

They would need 321 valid signatures from residents who voted in order to proceed with removing him from office.
