A neighborhood in Weirton is breathing a sigh of relief after a car crashed into a home, causing a natural gas leak. The residents were home when it happened.Rebecca Byers said she's happy to see crews lift this Volkswagen GTI out of her house on LaBelle Avenue.Byers said, "It's a Sunday afternoon, and you're just sitting and relaxing, and then, you've got three fire departments and News9 at your front door."Officials said it all started when a GTI parked in a driveway across the street began rolling down hill. Byers house, specifially her gas meter, stopped the car from going all the way over the hill.Byers said, "I could smell gas, and I went outside, and the neighbor yelled if anyone was in the house and he said, 'I just hit your house with my car.'"Byers said there must be a guardian angel looking over her and her family today. As the car slammed into her home, her 5-year-old grandson sat on her couch in the front room watching TV.Byers said, "I was downstairs. There would have been no way for me to get to him fast enough if a fire would have broke out."Byers is also thankfully her neighbors are safe.Byers said, "You've got neighbors everywhere. A hundred things could have gone wrong in a heart beat. They didn't. They really didn't, which is good. So much for chilling on a Sunday."Byers home only suffered minor damage. Firefighters said the gas meter will probably have to be replaced, along with some dented siding.
