Take Care Of Your Pet In Cold Weather
Your Pets Need Special Attention When The Mercury Drops
Sometimes our pets aren't the first thing we think about when the temperature drops, but they should be. Our pets need some special attention to keep the cold out.
Most outdoor pets are used to a little cold weather, but when the temperature drops into the single digits, its best to bring them inside. Robin Cibulka runs Hounds Haven in Smithfield and she says not everyone has the means to bring their pet inside, and if you have to leave them outside there are plenty of things you can do to keep them warm.
She says first you need to make sure your animal has a box with the hole offset to one side so your pet can move to the opposite side to keep out the wind. Next, line the bottom of the box with pine shavings. She says that will soak up any moisture in the box. Then put a layer of straw or hay in the box.
In these cold temperatures you can't forget about their water.
"When you've got the freezing temperatures all the time. You have to make sure they have fresh water. It freezes very quickly, so you need to get out there at least three times a day and make sure they have access to fresh water," says Robin Cibulka of Hounds Haven.
Your pets will also need to eat a little more during cold spells. They use more energy during the cold weather and eating more helps them retain their own energy level. Also, don't forget to pay attention to your breed of dog. Some dogs are made for cold weather and can stay out longer, while shorter haired breeds need to be brought in more frequently.
Robin tells me at the shelter she has some dogs that actually prefer the cold weather, so it all just depends on your pets preference.
