Icy Roads Keep Drivers On Their Toes
Snow Slipped Into The Valley, And Drivers Were Slowed On Snow Covered Roads
Snow turning to rain and freezing over has kept area drivers on their toes. The weather hasn't stopped changing all day and driving has been tough.
Saturday's sudden snow brought out the snow shovels and snow plows, but not everyone complains when it snows. Some actually like shoveling.
"Fun, a lot of fun, and I love it. Why is that? I'm helping people out," says Brenda Snell of Weirton.
Snow shovelers weren't the only one's clearing the road. Snow plows also had trouble keeping up with the snow. ODOT used about 100 tons of salt on the highways on Saturday. That's pretty average for a snow like this. The highways are starting to clear and in town the roads are just wet, but the secondary roads are still slick.
"Traveled roads help more because the traffic helps it, but any of the back roads, watch them," says Lois Wright of ODOT.
The Ohio Highway Patrol Post in Wintersville has had over 30 weather related calls on afternoon turn alone, and about 6 accidents. Trooper Greg Mamula says that drivers continue to make the same mistakes.
"The big mistake is too much speed. Slow it down. Give yourself a little extra time to get where you're going," says Mamula.
Some drivers love the snow, and when it does snow they want to be the first ones to break trail through the fresh powder.
"Oh yeah, that's why I have four wheel drive all the time. We like to drive in it and go out in it," says Bill Powers of Mingo.
ODOT tells News 9 the majority of the roads are still safe to drive, but the Highway Patrol is asking that if its not necessary to drive, stay home and stay safe.
