Local Engraver Selected For A Project To Be Presented To President Bush
Engraving metal by hand is a very rare talent. And Jefferson County is home to one of the top engravers in the country. So you could imagine his excitement when he was selected to engrave a gun specifically for President Bush.
Brian Powley- a 25 year Steel Worker at Wheeling- Pitt began playing around with metal engraving back around 1980. Back then, it started off as a hobby..and a way to make a little money on the side. But as his skills were perfected and with the advent of the internet, what once started as a hobby began growing into a business. "And it went from there, until 2 years ago. Now, I have just as much work at home as i did in the mill " says Powley.
Powley began engraving musical instruments, antique car parts, jewlery, and even guns. It's a process that's very time consuming.
One year ago, the American Pistolsmith Guild was looking for someone to engrave their gun of the year. Brian volunteered, and was chosen not only to do the 2004 gun of the year, but the 2005 gun of the year, and most recently...A special presentation gun to the President of the United States.
Brian Powley says that these recent opportunities have only made certain his decision to leave the mill. And he says, he couldn't be happier. "It's the desire to do what you want to do in this life, that makes all the difference " said Powley.
The gun should be finished and presented to the president by late summer, or early fall.
