Local High School Coach Arrested For DUI

A high school coach is arrested for drinking and driving, and his underage passenger and former student is arrested as well. News 9 has learned that Union Local Coach Vaughn Butler was arrested last month for a DUI. According to police, he was driving with a former student who was drunk and underage.

Butler has been a football and basketball coach with the Union Local School District for years. However, he is not a teacher with the schools.

The arrest happened in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta. Sources say he and Justin Schafer, 19, were driving back from the Bellaire/Athens regional basketball playoff game in Athens last month. According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Butler was speeding on Route 7. Officers pulled him over and smelled alcohol on his breath. Deputies arrested Butler for driving under the influence, and his former student was arrested for under-age consumption. Schafer used to play football under Butler's supervision.

Now, residents say coaches should act like role-models to current students, and the ones who have graduated.

"I think a person has the right to live their own life, but if that person is a person of power then they have to remember the people underneath them and people looking up to them," said one local man.

"Coaches are supposed to set a standard for their students and that doesn't set a very good one," said another resident.

Sources say this is the second time Butler has been in trouble for an incident involving a student. News 9 did talk to administration with Union Local Thursday afternoon. Superintendent Kirk Glasgow says the district will do the right thing once the time comes, but they want to wait and see if Butler is found guilty of the crime. Butler will be in Washington County court at the end of the month.
