Hate Crime In Jefferson County

A Cross Is Burned In An Adena Family's Yard

About two months ago, the Evans family in Adena had a cross set on fire in their front yard, but its not the first time they were threatened at their home.

"Within 24 hours, all four of my tires got slashed. I had a cross burned in my yard. I mean its just ridiculous," says Donald Evans.

Evans and his family were inside their Adena home on March ninth when Evans looked outside to find a three foot cross burning in the yard. He says there was also a decapitated rabbit placed on his car.

"People that do things like that have to be sick in the mind, and apparently have nothing better to do," says Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla.

"She came out the side door and the cross was being burned right here, exactly seven feet from my side door," says Evans.

The case was reported to the Adena Police Department the night it happened, but that investigation hasn't produced any arrests. The Steubenville chapter of the NAACP called a news conference to get the word out about the hate crime, and earlier this week the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department took on the case.

"The sheriffs department actually got involved with the investigation within the last three days. I spent yesterday, in Adena, trying to track down some information. I've interviewed some people, and have ruled them out," says Abdalla.

Since this is a hate crime, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified of the case. Currently they are reviewing all the information in this case. Evans says he saw two people running from his yard when the cross was burned. He didn't sleep the entire weekend it happened, and he doesn't want to live in fear in the place he grew up.

"I don't want to start conflict, I just want something done. I think its necessary. I have three kids," says Evans.

"The FBI, local authorities, and NAACP will trace this down. We'll find out who did it, and they will face due process of the law," says NAACP President Ruel Mitchell.

Sheriff Abdalla says he still has three suspects in this case, and will be tracking those people down to find out who's reponsible for the cross burning.

Once that person or people are found, they will face at least misdemeanor intimidation charges.
