USWA President Stops In Brooke County To Rally For Kerry

As folks across the United States celebrate the working American this Labor Day, some steel workers here in the Ohio Valley say they can't enjoy fruits of their labor - because they say the Bush administration has taken that privilege away.

"Steel Workers for John Kerry" gathered at a home in Brooke County Monday morning listen to a speech by United Steel Workers of America President Leo Gerard. Gerard came to the Ohio Valley to voice his support for John Kerry.

Gerard stood on the front porch of a steel worker's home to "talk about real issues with the real people." He was surrounded by steel workers holding "Steel Workers for John Kerry" signs.

Gerard talked to the crowd about why he thinks Bush/Cheney administration does not support steel. The USWA unanimously voted to support the Kerry/Edwards ticket earlier in the campaign.

Gerard says John Kerry and John Edwards understand the lives of steel workers, and he says Kerry will help retirees get back their health benefits and be an overall positive change for America as a whole.

"Those voters have to figure out if they're better off now then four years ago," Gerard said. "Are their jobs more secure? Is their health care more secure? Are their pensions more secure?"

Steel workers at the rally say they hope Gerard's visit will help put pressure on the current and future administration to fight for better benefits for the American people.
