On Strike!

Weirton, WV -- Hundreds of picketers lined up outside a makeshift fence that surrounds Weirton Medical Center Wednesday for their one-day strike. SEIU union members say they hope the strike sends a strong message to administrators.
"They [Weirton Medical's board] continue to insist on concessions and givebacks from employees that are just not justified," said Dave Regan, SEIU District 1199 President. "That's what this strike is about."
SEIU is asking for better wages, better benefits, and better patient care items. Weirton Medical Center has come back with its own offers, saying some of the union's proposals would put the hospital in financial dispair.
"If you start promising things today to settle things economically, it's going to catch up with you," said Gregg Warren, spokesman for the hospital.
Union workers picketing outside Weirton Medical Center Wednesday say they will work as a team until they can get a contract that is best for their families and their patients.
"We will send a message to the hospital and the community that we are here for one reason - and that is for our patients," said Union Member Mary Flora.
"We have some that are working full time and still need food stamps to feed their families, and that's not fair," added Tim Connell. Connell is also a member of SEIU.
The hospital is still open during this strike, however, some services are limited due to the limited staff. Non-union workers say they are staying on the job because they are not willing to allow patients to go a single day without healthcare.
"No matter what they're picketing about outside, the bottom line is the patients are still here and they still need taken care of," said Nurse Alayna Heilman. Heilman is not a member of the SEIU.
Weirton Medical Center has established a hotline with live operators answering general questions Wednesday. The number is (304) 797-6500.
