"Narrows" Are Constant Problem

Thursday night a mud and rock slide, on WV RT 2, killed one man and injured five others. On Friday the department of highways met with several contractors to find out how much clearing the slip will cost. To reopen the road DOH will need to remove all loose materials.

Every year the sheriff's department says they receive hundreds of calls and complaints about accidents and incidents. Unofficially the sheriff's department says they see about one fatality a year due to the falling rocks.

"Driving through the narrows at night on a rainy night and you can't see it's like taking a chance on death, said McMechen resident, Heather Montgomery.

West Virginia route 2 between McMechen and Glen Dale is closed until engineers can return the road to safe driving conditions

"Since we've had rains in September and January now we're getting mud slides and rock slides from further up the hill which is a lot more dangerous," said WV DOH district engineer Robert Whipp.

The road is a constant hazard for drivers. Over the past few months the department of highways has constantly patrolled and cleared the road in an effort to keep drivers safe.

"There's slips off that once a week. My nephew, he blew out a tire busted rims. It happens all the time, said McMechen resident, Adam Angel.

As the rocks continue to fall from the side of the hill they have received money and have marked the road to put up a retaining wall.

Just talked to the engineers today about it. The design is still proceeding. We're probably going to hurry it up. We'll expect it to be here this summer to do the work," said Whipp.

But for now the road will remain closed until those hazards are no longer there. Whipp says he expects the road to reopen in a week.
