Drug Warnings

The government is warning people about two popular arthritis medications--Bextra and Celebrex. Studies link the drugs to higher risks of heart attack and strokes.

Today, one of the medications was pulled from pharmacy shelves. It may be in your medicine cabinet, but Bextra is being pulled from the market. Drug maker Pfizer is no longer selling the pain killer drug and is asking people to get a different medication.

According to the Federal Government, Bextra and other Cox-2 Class pain relievers have been associated with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.

Pharmacist Jeff Blake says, "They are both blockbuster drugs that have quite a large following across the world, and there are lots of alternatives out there things that have been out for quite awhile and they know the safety profile a little better than these newer drugs."

Also, a new warning label on the drug Celebrex will highlight potential increased risks of cardiovascular problems and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Pfizer has stopped the sale of Bextra in the the United States and the European Union, but says it plans further talks with the government about the possibility of returning Bextra to the market.
