Route 2 Narrows Reopen

The stretch of road between Glen Dale and McMechen, in Marshall County, is nearly two miles long but the detour had drivers going much further to get to their destinations. For more than two weeks the road was shut down after a Moundsville, WV man was killed in a car accident. The accident was blamed on rocks falling into the road.

After it was closed down a contractor pushed all the loose trees, rocks and mud onto the road and it was then cleared away.

Now that the road is reopened businesses and customers seem to be happy.

"When they opened the road it was like, alright , finally. Customers have come back in. I had one guy tell me he didn't have coffee for two weeks because we were closed. I told him we weren't closed you just didn't go around the block," said Dairy Mart Manager, Chris Richards.

The department of highways spent $350,000 on the repairs. But according to WV DOH, Route 2 could soon see more closures in that same area. Engineers are looking at designs for building a safety wall. The work is expected to start in the summer time.

District engineer Bob Whipp says there could be a one to two lane closure but a total shut down is not expected. he also adds that drivers should still be cautious because rain can still loosen mud causing more slides.
