Police Send Tainted Candy To State Crime Lab

Posted: 11:48 pm EST October 31, 2005

Powhatan Point police are concerned about an apparent incident of candy tampering on Halloween night.

Police tell NEWS 9 a child ate a bite-sized "Snickers Cruncher" bar and bit into a small gold needle embedded in the candy.

The child was not hurt by the needle, but police are worried about whether the needle may have been tainted.

They've sent the bar off to a lab at the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification for further testing.

"It could be contaminated with any numerous amount of substances," said Officer Jeremy Guard of the Powhatan Point police. "HIV, narcotics, foreign blood. We just don't know yet. That's why we're sending it to BCI to have it analyzed further to see if it is laced with anything. Then we'll go from there."

Police believe this is an isolated incident, but they are encouraging parents to take a closer look at their childrens' Halloween candy before allowing them to eat it.
