Traffic Cameras: Where's The Money Going?
The traffic cameras set up throughout the city of Steubenville are creating quite a stir.
The newest traffic camera is tracking anyone speeding more than 5 miles over the limit through school zones, but since October, when the cameras started tracking speeders, Target 9 has learned how much the cameras have generated in fines.
According to the city's finance office, as of October 31st, the traffic cameras have netted $73,010.00. About 30-thousand of that money will go to Traffipax, the company which provides the cameras to the city. The rest goes into the general fund, into a section listed as fines and forfeitures and can help provide money for the city departments.
Right now there are 3 traffic cameras set up in the city, one monitors the intersection at University Boulevard and Ohio Route 7, a second is a mobile camera set up at different points throughout the city, the third, and the newest will monitor anyone speeding through a school zone.
While local drivers say its important to obey the law, many are worried about one thing, people bypassing Steubenville to avoid the cameras.
Steubenville city manager Bruce Williams says the goal of the cameras is not to make money but to stop speeders.
He says in time, the citations should go down and decrease the need for the cameras.
