City Manager Accused Of Credit Card Misuse

The Steubenville city manager is facing some serious allegations by his former employer. Officials in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., say Bruce Williams misused the city credit card.

The city manager said he did nothing wrong, and said no one from Arizona has even contacted him about the investigation.

"[I'm] just simply in their cross hairs," said Williams. "I've been a target ever since I left there."

The Lake Havasu City newspaper, Today's News Herald, printed a story that alleges Williams made four purchases with taxpayer dollars for his own use.

The purchases were: A digital camera, golf outings, condo rentals, and a gift certificate. The city manager didn't deny these purchases.

"Over the course of my eight years in that community I've made hundreds of purchases on the credit card, all of them for legal purchases," Williams said.

Williams said the gift certificate was for an out-going mayor, the condo rentals may have been for visiting dignitaries, and the others were all legitimate purchases and common practice at the city.

He said the investigation stemmed from a lawsuit filed by a former city prosecutor against Lake Havasu City. He said his purchases are being scrutinized as part of a growing investigation. Williams just wants a chance to answer the allegations.

"They need to just simply file charges and allow me the chance to defend myself," Williams said.

The Steubenville mayor, Domenick Mucci, said he supports the city manager and said there are checks and balances in place to prevent any misuse in Steubenville.
