Glen Dale Narrows Project To Start
A fatal accident brought attention to the danger of rock slides in the Glen Dale narrows.
According to the West Virginia Department of Highways, the road known as the "narrows" will see closures for construction starting March 14, 2006. The work is to place temporary concrete barriers that will set the way for crews to install permanent rock fencing along the edge of the hillside.
The work will require crews to close the slow lane on the north bound side.
The rock slides on the stretch of road caused a fatal accident in 2005. Gov. Manchin visited the site, shortly after the accident, while the road was closed for weeks.
After the fatal accident, the hillside was stabilized. The highway's district engineer said the closure will last into the fall of 2006.
The permanent fence will be similar to one along WV Route 2, south of Moundsville.
The cost for the temporary barriers is $150,000 and does not include the work for the permanent fence.
