Alma Mine Slapped With 107 New Safety Citations
Federal records show the Logan County mine where two men died as the result of a January belt line fire has been cited for more than 100 new safety violations.
Inspectors with the U-S Mine Safety and Health Administration issued 107 citations for Aracoma Coal's Alma Number One Mine in Melville for violations discovered over the past month while investigating the accident.
Seventy-seven of the citations for the Massey Energy mine were deemed significant and substantial.
In five instances, M-SHA inspectors alleged an unwarrantable failure by Massey to comply with federal mine safety rules.
No penalties had been assessed as of yesterday, according to M-SHA's Web site. Calls to Massey today seeking comment were not immediately returned.
The alleged violations include accumulations of combustible materials, inadequate fire detection equipment, ventilation problems, violations of roof control standards, training requirements, electrical equipment guidelines and mine escapeway rules.
