Terri Schiavo's Brother Speaks At Franciscan University
Thursday, April 6, 2006
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- He was a key player in the very bitter, very public struggle over the life and death of Terri Schiavo.
Thursday, Schiavo's brother, Bobby Schindler spoke with students on the campus of Franciscan University.
Schindler once had dreams of being a TV weatherman.
Instead, he ended up making regular appearances on the network news vigorously defending his family's push to keep his sister on life support.
Now, he's on a worldwide lecture circuit including Thursday's stop at Franciscan University.
One year after his family lost its battle and the courts ordered Terri's feeding tube removed, NEWS9 asked Schindler why his family would want to relive such a difficult time.
"If you heard the cries of people in the disabled community that have approached us and asked us to continue to fight on their behalf, you'd understand," said Schindler.
Schindler and his family have just released a book about Terri's life and death.
Her husband, Michael, simultaneously released his own book, defending his position on Terri's dying wishes.
In an interview with NBC's Matt Lauer, Schiavo also defended himself against allegations there were marital problems before Terri's debilitating heart failure.
"Terri and I were trying to get pregnant," Schiavo told Lauer. "Now tell me why would she have wanted to bring my child into this world if she wanted to divorce me? So they can say what they want to."
Bobby Schindler says his family's fight with Michael is over and now they're focused on the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation.
"One of our goals is to set up a network of doctors and lawyers across the country," said Schindler. "So if a family calls from Ohio, we can have doctors and lawyers to refer them to if a situation would arise similar to what happened to my sister."
