2 Year Old Wanders Onto Busy Highway

Sunday afternoon, police said a man was driving south on Route 2 near Benwood, when he looked over and saw a baby boy walking near the road.

"He saw a small child in diapers walking alongside the highway, thankfully he stopped and picked the child up," said Lieutenant Dave McLaughlin, from the Benwood Police Department.

Benwood Police took the 2 year old boy into headquarters, and later found out he belonged to Sandra Hall of Wheeling.

Police said the boy had somehow made his way out of an apartment on the 4400 block of Wood Street, and walked more than four blocks, until he ended up on busy Route 2.

McLaughlin said Hall claims she fell asleep.

"Apparently she was sleeping, and the other daughter was supposed to be taking care of him," said McLaughlin.

We tried to contact Hall for comment, but no one was home Sunday evening.

NEWS9 did, however, talk to her neighbor, Tammy Norris, who said she was shocked to hear the news.

"I'm having a hard time adjusting, to know that a 2 year old was able to get that far," said Norris.

The boy did not suffer any injuries.

The investigation has been turned over to Wheeling Police, and Lieutenant Marty Kimball said there is a chance Hall could face charges.

"It's certainly a possibility," said Kimball. "It needs investigation to determine why the child was left in a state where he could manage to get all the way to Route 2."
