Traffic Cameras Making Comeback
Drivers in Steubenville will soon notice that they're being watched. The city has decided to put the controversial traffic cameras back up - and that has many local residents angered.Attorney Gary Stern, who spearheaded the class action lawsuit to have the cameras removed, said all he needs is one angry client to fight the city in court again. He said, even though city officials feel their re-vamped plan will hold up in court, Stern disagrees.City officials said Monday they will erect signs to warn drivers that the cameras are in use. Stern said that's not good enough."The judge did not address the constitutional issue and the city is still going to have to face that eventually. And I think they're going to lose," Stern said. Some local drivers think the cameras will only cause problems.Robert Pint, said, "We have policemen to do that job. If you have the cameras, you don't need all the policemen."But Stern said these cameras will hurt more than police jobs - he said they will harm the entire city."People from outside the city and surrounding communities are not going to come to Steubenville. They're not going to drive through to shop, to do business," Stern said.Even though the city said the cameras provide proof of speeding drivers, Stern said even the photos have no chance in court."In any other court of law you could not produce a photograph and say, 'Judge, this is proof of what happened.' Only in this case do they think that a photograph of your car proves you were speeding," he said.Stern believes that the focus of the entire situation is money. He said the city is bound to a 5-year contract with Traffipax, the company who manufactures the cameras.City officials contend that the cameras are beneficial and are necessary to stop speeding drivers.Stay with NEWS9 for continuing coverage.-Renee Cardelli & Allison Latos, NEWS9
