Big Ben In Motorcycle Crash

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underwent surgery Monday afternoon for injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident.

At around 11:30 a.m., Roethlisberger was traveling east on Second Avenue in Pittsburgh when he collided with a car making a left turn onto the 10th Street Bridge.

Upon impact, Roethlisberger, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown over the handlebars of his motorcycle. His head then struck the windshield of the turning vehicle.

Witnesses said that Roethlisberger was bleeding heavily from his head before he was transported to the hospital.

Larry M. Jones, Chief of Trauma & Burn Unit at Mercy Hospital, said Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition.

Jones said Roethlisberger was coherent and talked to the doctors before the operation.

A source close to the Steelers organization said Roethlisberger suffered injuries to the face and head, but would not disclose details.

Findlay, Ohio, Mayor Tony Iriti said Roethlisberger’s family is on their way to Pittsburgh.

Roethlisberger and his mother were to begin shooting a Campbell's Chunky Soup commercial this week at Heinz Field. A local crew was scheduled to help with the $2 million shoot.

The Steelers quarterback has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding.
