Catlins Face Fraud Charges

A local couple accused of fraudulently claiming to be victims of Hurricane Katrina and passing bad checks were in court Monday.

William Catlin, who previously pleaded guilty to writing bad checks, was sentenced to community control. The judge also ordered that he must pay $200 each month for that check fraud or he could be arrested again.

Catlin and his wife, Audra, were previously charged with child endangerment, but those charges were later dismissed. Police alleged the Catlins' home was in deplorable conditions, allegations the couple denied.

William Catlin's attorney said since the Catlins' children were returned to their custody, the family has had some additional financial strain. The attorney said those financial problems have made William Catlin unable to make payments consistently, but said his client will begin making those court-ordered payments in July.

Audra Catlin's fraud charges for allegedly claiming to be a victim of Hurricane Katrina were continued on Monday. A new court date is set for July.

In addition, the Catlins' new landlords, Don and Nan Ferren, said on Monday they may push more legal issues with the Catlins.

The Ferrens said until they watched NEWS9's interview with the Catlins in their new home, they had no idea it was the same couple. The Ferrens said on the rental application, the couple declared that their last residence was in Maryland, not Bellaire.

An eviction notice states the Catlins must be out of their new apartment in St. Clairsville by June 30 or risk more financial problems.
