ATVs May Soon Be Allowed In State Park
![]() |
Jefferson Lake State Park officials said they are optimistic about allowing ATV riders on their grounds. However, people NEWS9 spoke with at the park said they don't think it's such a good idea.
Park Manager Doug Lyons said the park area is underused, and with so many ATV riders in the area, the park's trails and terrain are perfect locations for riders. Lyons cited the park's hilly terrain, lack of visitation, and the rural setting of the park.
However, park goers said they are not crazy about the thought of hearing engines roaring through a normally peaceful park.
"There's so many other places they can ride. I don't believe it's a good idea for state parks," said Canton, Ohio resident, Mark Liskey.
With so many serious accidents reported, Liskey said he thinks ATVs in the park could be dangerous. Officials said they plan to add safety precautions to the park if the plans go through.
"We will put on weekly safety programs showing the different riding styles, braking techniques, and the importance of a helmet. We'll do that weekly," Lyons said.
Another thing that concerns people in the area is the lack of cell phone service, in case of an emergency.
"If you get hurt down here, there's no body here to help you. You're pretty much on your own," said Wintersville, Ohio resident, Lenny Dye.
Officials said they hope to have more officers patrolling the area if the plans go through.
