Teens Confess To Robbing Animal Shelter
Police said two 17-year-old Belmont County teens have admitted to robbing the Belmont County Animal Shelter once in May and once back in April.
Employees at the shelter say the money that the two stole was used for animal medical operations, and funds that just keep the shelter going.
Police said the teens are now realizing what they did.
"Both of them were relatively cooperative," said Sgt. Steve Forro.
"Obviously at the onset, nobody wants to admit they'd done something wrong, but after talking to them for a short period of time, they both realized they had made a big mistake, but they seemed remorseful for what they did."
Tuesday night, divers searched a small pond in Uniontown, Ohio, hoping to find some evidence in the case.
Forro said the juveniles told him there was paperwork from the shelter they wanted to get rid of, so they threw it into the pond.
"We had divers in the water at one of the residence of one of the suspects," said Forro. "Divers went in for approximately two hours and we found nothing."
Forro said even though nothing came from the search, officers did recover some cash from one of the juveniles.
He said at this point he considers the case to be closed, since the two teens stepped forward.
Forro said teens will most likely have to pay a fine, and it will be up to the juvenile court judge to decide if they will spend time in a juvenile detention center.
