Steubenville Reinstates Traffic Cameras
6-to-1 Vote Brings Back Controversial System
Posted: 11:53 pm EDT June 20, 2006
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Steubenville City Council voted 6-to-1 Tuesday night to bring back its traffic camera system.
Councilman-at-large Mike Hernon cast the sole dissenting vote.
The cameras have been off-line since a class-action lawsuit challenged the legality of the cameras.
Judge David Henderson ruled the city had failed to give drivers proper notice the cameras would be in use.
The new city ordinance brings back the cameras but also calls for conspicuous signs at the city's entrances to warn drivers photo enforcement is in use.
The city will use revenue from the $85 tickets for neighborhood repairs and the city's parks.
The cameras should be back on city streets by July 21st.
