Another Traffic Camera Lawsuit Filed

Just days after city council decided traffic cameras could come back to Steubenville, a local business filed suit against the city.

Suit was filed by Louis Tripodi, who has operated the Steubenville Bakery since 1937. Tripodi alleges he lost business when the traffic cameras hit the streets last year.

Tripodi said customers from Weirton and other surrounding areas told him the cameras discouraged them from even coming near the city.

"The first time they put in the cameras, it impacted my business," Tripodi said. "The people that come from across the river were getting tickets (and) they told me that they were afraid to come over here. They consider Steubenville a speed trap."

On Tuesday, the third and final reading of the traffic camera ordinance passed in council with a 6-1 vote. The cameras are slated to be back on the streets July 21.

Tripodi is represented by attorney Gary Stern, who sued the city once before over the cameras -- and won.

"He's saying it's hurting his business, I think he has a good reason to believe that," Stern said.

The last time the city used the cameras, a judge ruled the city didn't properly notify drivers that they were in use.

The city is now amending that code so signs are posted at the entrances to the city.
