Citizens Petition Traffic Cameras
NEWS9 reported Friday that a judge in Girard, Ohio, ruled the same traffic cameras being used in Steubenville are unconstitutional. Now some Steubenville citizens said they won't wait to see if it becomes a statewide precedent, and are taking the traffic camera matters into their own hands.
"I'm trying to keep the cameras out of Steubenville. I don't support them, but maybe this is a different time and a different era. Maybe the people in Steubenville want the cameras, if they want it, so be it," said petition organizer Gary Kessler.
Now a petition is in circulation, and if organizers collect more than 660 signatures within 30 days, voters may see traffic camera questions on their ballots in November.
"I don't think it was fair the way they were doing it, and I don't think it was right. And I think that the citizens have a right to say what they want," said Steubenville resident Betty Mentica.
Saturday at the Treasure Island Flea Market, NEWS9 found lots of people signing, and heard lots of strong opinions.
"They're going to stop me from shopping in Steubenville. I can spend my money anywhere without taking chances on a ticket. If they want to give me a ticket, sit out in the car and do it the old-fashioned way," said Richmond resident Gary Skinner.
The petition at the flea market was not the only one. Organizers said there are others circulating, and they feel confident that they'll get the signatures they need. You must have voted in the last election to be eligible to sign the petition.
