O R & W Fire District turns attention to overnight hours

Updated: Monday, March 31 2014, 03:09 PM EDT

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio The Ohio River and Western Fire District is turning its attention to overnight hours.
Paid firefighters and EMS are answering calls for both the village of Shadyside and Mead Township and officials.
Every second counts, especially in an emergency.
It's a saying those at the OR&W Fire District all, like all first responders, try to live by.
We noticed a significant dropoff in volunteers to our department, so with that, we asked the voters two years ago in Mead Township and in Shadyside to pass a levy to create the OR&W Fire District, OR&W board chair Gregg Warren said.
That way we have a steady source of income coming into the district, and were able to afford to pay firefighters and EMS to be at the station most of the time.
The levy generated enough funding for a paid day shift, which began April 1 2013.
It seems to be paying off twofold.
In the near future, we will be releasing statistics that show over the past year how answering fire and emergency calls in the middle of the day has significantly increased, Warren said. I mean theres hardly a call thats ever missed during the daytime.
The implementation of a second paid shift really comes down to frugal financing, which ultimately led to the available funding for a midnight-to-8 a.m. shift.
Because thats when our statistics show a lot of emergency calls come in, Warren said.
Anyone interested in applying for paid overnight shift with the The OR&W Fire District can do so by email at shadysidefd35@aol.com.
