BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – It was one of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s busiest weekends in history.
The main reason? It fell on a Friday.
Holiday travels started on Thursday for most people, keeping the OSHP active until Sunday.
“This 4th of July, we saw a huge increase in the activity and traffic,” Lt. James Faunda of the St. Clairsville Post of the OSHP said.
He said the numbers were staggering.
They had more than 1,150 traffic stops, 912 citations, 10 OVI arrests, 182 warnings, 84 aggressive driving violations, and four misdemeanors.
Faunda said they had 17 troopers working 12 hour shifts. He says the bulk of traffic was between the hours of 6 a.m.- 8 p.m.
The most important number of all that? Faunda wanted to stress is that they had zero fatalities in Belmont and Monroe Counties.
“That is the purpose of all the time we spend on the roadway,” Faunda said. “We're trying to prevent people from dying and this weekend we were successful."
Even though this hectic holiday weekend on the roads is over for OHP, the craziness is just beginning. Faunda says the next few days will be just as busy for them processing all of this weekend's paperwork.
