211 helpline launched in Belmont County

Updated: Wednesday, July 16 2014, 06:16 PM EDT
BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- A free community service residents can use to get information about social, health and government resources 24 hours a day -- every day -- is now up and running throughout Belmont County.
It's called 211, and it's very similar to 911.
Individuals who have different types of social service needs can call the number, and they'll be connected with organizations for their particular needs.
"In the state of Ohio, there are about 20 counties that do not have 211, and Belmont County is the largest populated county that still does not have 211,” said George Smoulder of the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley. “We were approached … if we were willing to be the sponsors of 211 here. Thanks to a grant that we've acquired from CareSource, we've been able to become the sponsors and we're very, very excited about that."
Smoulder adds that 211 will not only help connect people with their needs, it will also help officials identify some of Belmont County's unmet needs.
