BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio --

Local and federal officials are investigating after more than $80,000 was stolen from the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District.

The investigation started last week when school officials were notified that the district’s account at Citizens Bank was overdrawn.

Superintendent Ted Downing said he believes the school district’s computer system was hacked.

The FBI is looking into the matter. As of Tuesday, the money had not been recovered.

Downing said, "The way people can do things with technology today, you hate being compromised. We will assure the people of the district we will be doing everything possible and feel confident we will get the money back.”

Employees were notified about the compromise in the computer system this week. Downing said he wanted to make sure staff members were not affected.

He said extra security measures are now in place, and said he does not believe it was the fault of anyone on staff.
