BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – American Electric Power announced a $40 million project will soon come to Mead Township, bringing with it better, more reliable service.

AEP contacted the Belmont Commissioner’s Office in February with news about a new project in the area.

Two substations will be built in Mead Township on Hawthorne Road off County Road 48.

“This project is moving very quick,” Belmont County Commissioner Matt Coffland said. “But with the announcement (Thursday), it looks like it’s ready to go to construction.”

AEP representatives said the project is for reliability and will provide better service for the community.

“It will improve the grid for power to not only Belmont County, but all surrounding areas,” Coffland said. “It’s a great project. It is an upgrade and it will help if any future development comes to Belmont County.”

There will be a lot of heavy trucks on the roads during construction and there may be possible delays for residents.

Coffland said the project will take about a year and roads will be monitored during that time.

“AEP did meet with the commission and met with the county engineer, and we’ll be ready when they’re ready,” he said.

AEP expects to start construction by the end of May and plans for the stations to go into service in December 2015.
