The Belmont County Animal Shelter has severe damage after water pipes burst inside the building overnight.

Shelter officials said all animals are accounted for and the water was contained to two rooms. The kennel area was not affected.

Shelter coordinator Diane Amend said the pipe burst sometime late Tuesday into early Wednesday. It didn't take long for water gushing from under the door to freeze, causing the door to freeze shut.

"All of the pipes are in the ceiling, so what happened is they busted. Well then, we have drop ceilings, so the tiles and the insulation are all saturated, so it's all coming down," Amend said. "Most of our paperwork is probably gone."

She said the kennel area is fine and there is still heat in that section of the shelter.

Crews are working to turn the water back on at the shelter, and an official with the county commissioners' office came to assess the damage. The shelter also contacted its insurance company and Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration.

The Belmont County Maintenance Department is lending a hand, as workers were able to stop water from spouting and shut off electricity to the front of the building.

Much of the damage was still being assessed Wednesday as a cleanup plan is put together. Stay with NEWS9 and for continuing coverage.
