WHEELING, W.Va. -- It's almost time to go back to school. With that, the Rotary of Wheeling and St. Clairsville Sunrise Rotary, along with the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple, are collecting school supplies to give away to area youth to start the school off on the right foot.
Last year was a success when 400-500 children in need received donated school supplies handed out at North Wheeling Youth Community Center. Officials are hoping for the same kind of response from the community this year.
"Instead of saying it's time to go back to school; they'll say it's time to go back to school!" Dr. Darrell W. Cummings of the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple said.
The Adopt-A-Student program is designed to help the less fortunate return to the classroom with a smile.
"We're hoping to collect as many school supplies as we can," Cummings said, "so we help as many kids as we can."
As for what to bring, donators have quite the laundry list to choose from.
"We look for notebooks, rulers, pens, pencils, protractors, anything that somebody K-12 would use," Cummings said.
Cummings expanded the reach of his annual school supplies giveaway after he says he reflected on his own childhood memories.
"When my parents moved from inner city of Cleveland to the suburbs of Cleveland, my parents were honest enough to say they put all the money into the house and didn't have any money for school supplies," Cummings said. "And I remember the embarrassment of going to a new school and not having anything."
That's why he and many others work so hard to bring a positive message during a sometimes difficult time of year for some students.
"Your attitude determines your altitude," Cumming said.
The collection will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday at the Wal-Mart in St. Clairsville. The distribution of these donations will take place Aug. 16, where there will be games, free prizes, and food to families in need. Medical partners will also provide checkups for the children. Free school book bags and school supplies will be handed out to children at the North Wheeling Youth Center next to the Bethlehem Apostolic Church in Wheeling. They ask that the child be present to receive school supplies.
