Belmont County checkpoint next six OVI arrests

Updated: Monday, August 25 2014, 01:04 PM EDT
MARTINS FERRY, Ohio – Authorities in Belmont County tasked with taking drunk drivers and other criminal offenders off the highways are calling Saturday night a success.
More than 1,000 cars passed through a weekend checkpoint where multiple agencies set up shop for 4 hours on Ohio 7 at the Aetnaville/Martins Ferry line.
Lt. James Faunda of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the checkpoint was perfect timing, chosen for Saturday because it's in the middle of the "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose,” -- a federally funded initiative for law enforcement to deter drunk driving.
The strategic planning seemed to pay off for law enforcement, made up of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Bridgeport and Martins Ferry police.
Here's a breakdown of the combined statistics from all three agencies:
More than 1,000 vehicles passed through this stretch Saturday from 11 p.m.–3 a.m. Sunday.
Of those vehicles, 14 were diverted for further investigation based on probable cause.
"Overall, we arrested six drivers for OVI, which is very good considering the checkpoints that we hold around the state," Faunda said.
Also single misdemeanor and felony arrests were made, while two more were taken to jail for outstanding warrants. Heroin was also discovered inside a vehicle on the Martins Ferry side.
"The whole point of the checkpoint is to serve as a deterrent, and let the public know that we are looking for drunk drivers -- the No. 1 cause of traffic fatalities in the state of Ohio,” Faunda said.
