BRIDGEPORT, Ohio -- Bridgeport Police Chief Andy Klotz said it may be the quickest bank robbery capture in the village to date after a suspect was nabbed just minutes after a robbing a bank Tuesday morning.
A 911 call came in at 9:48 a.m. from Citizens Bank on Howard Street. A teller told police a man came into the bank wearing sweatpants, a hooded sweatshirt and a ball cap.
“The man came into the bank with a small handgun, pointed the handgun at her and told her to give him all of the money,” Klotz said.
The employee gave the armed robber the cash, and he fled the bank on foot, west through an alley.
"As the male fled the bank, he did throw the weapon,” Klotz said. “We were able to take that weapon into evidence."
Police tracked the suspect down mere minutes later in the Boydsville area. The cash was also recovered at the scene.
Klotz says Bridgeport, Bellaire, and Martins Ferry police, along with the sheriff's office and state highway patrol, teamed up for a successful, speedy conclusion to this case.
"All the response made everyone's job easier,” Klotz said.
Authorities are not releasing the name of the suspect currently in custody at the Belmont County Jail. Although police did say he's from the Jefferson County area.
More information is expected to be released in the coming days.
