BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- Beginning Monday across Ohio, troopers say there are no excuses – wear your seat belt – as they started their Click It Or Ticket program.
“Troopers have zero tolerance for seat belt violations, and it's because we know they save lives,” Lt. James Faunda with the St. Clairsville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
More than 900 law enforcement partners around Ohio, including the OSHP, are now aggressively enforcing the rules of the road and targeting drivers who are neglecting to buckle up.
“Law enforcement is increasing their efforts and citing people for not wearing their seatbelts, all in an attempt to gain compliance with the mandatory seatbelt law we have here in Ohio," Faunda said.
In a staggering number of fatal crashes, a large percentage of those killed aren't following Ohio laws, Faunda said.
"Belmont and Monroe County, of all the fatal crashes that we investigate, at least 75 percent of those that are killed are not wearing their safety belt," he said.
Compare those numbers to last year, where 59 percent of people killed in Ohio weren't wearing their seatbelts.
Director of Ohio Department of Public Safety John Born said it’s simple.
“Safety belts save lives and reduce injury in crashes,” he said. “It is the easiest thing you can do to protect yourself, your family and your friends.
“When we talk about the 75 percent of people killed each year that are not wearing seatbelts, if we could save at least half of those, our fatal numbers would drop dramatically."
The Buckeye State is joining forces with the surrounding states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia troopers.
It’s all part of a six-state effort to get drivers in compliance.
This year’s
While this year's Click It Or Ticket enforcement runs through June 1, troopers will continue their zero tolerance policy year-round.
